Amp Connectors and the Last Few Parts Your Retrofit Needs
You are close to done. The projectors are in, the shrouds are seated, and now you are staring at a pile of loose wire ends wondering what actually finishes the job. This is where amp connectors, pins, and the small hardware come in, the stuff nobody plans for until the build is almost finished.
Here is the catch with these connectors: Deutsch style connectors are built for 16-18 gauge wire, while AMP (Amphenol) connectors step up to handle roughly 14-16 gauge. That one gauge difference matters if you are matching connectors to an existing harness instead of building fresh, so check your wire size before you commit to a connector style rather than after you have already crimped it. The multi-pin AMP connectors are molded from OEM-grade plastic and seal tighter than most standard connectors, which is exactly why pairing them with Morimoto LectricLube dielectric grease keeps the contacts from corroding on outdoor runs.
In practice, most builds need more than one type of connector. Some runs call for a sealed multi-pin AMP connector, others are fine with a smaller Deutsch pin, and your ballast or igniter setup may dictate which one you need regardless of preference. So instead of guessing, match the connector to the wire gauge and the component on the other end first.
From there, dielectric grease and proper crimps matter just as much as the connector itself. A watertight housing only stays watertight if it is installed correctly.
If you still need to route or extend wiring before you get to connectors, I would start with the wire harnesses built for retrofit work, then come back here to finish the connections.
