HID Ballast Upgrades: XB35 and XB55 Systems
Every HID ballast takes a 12 volt signal from your car and turns it into a roughly 23,000 volt spark just to light the bulb. That sounds dramatic, but it is the baseline job every ballast on this page has to do well, night after night, in heat, cold, and vibration. What actually separates a good one from a bad one is how it handles that job over years, not just on day one.
We designed and build the XB35 and XB55 ourselves, and the choice between them comes down to lifespan and output color. The XB55 runs about 20% brighter than the XB35, but because it runs hotter it is rated for 3 years instead of 5; since the HID bulbs are burning hotter it will make the output color about 1000 kelvin warmer. Both use removable igniters separate from the ballast body, a layout borrowed from OEM design, so if one part ever fails you replace that igniter, not the whole unit. The XB35 2.0 itself is an 18mm design built around a die-cast aluminum shell and AMP SuperSeal connector, with over half a million units shipped in the last six years.
In practice that igniter detail matters more than people expect. Older "Orange Bracket" XB35 and XB55 ballasts from 2015 and 2016 only pair with Orange AMP or Orange D2S igniters, so if you are mixing and matching spare parts or handling a warranty swap, check your serial number before you order. The first two digits after XB tell you the build year.
Running a full conversion rather than a ballast-only replacement? Confirm your bulb and ballast pairing first, then see what your vehicle needs for wiring over on Wire Harnesses, since the wrong harness is a common source of flicker complaints that get blamed on the ballast.
