License Plate & Reverse
License Plate Lights: Bulb Swap or Full XB Housing?
A lot of owners treat the license plate light like an afterthought, a cheap bulb that just needs to be brighter than the dim yellow glow it replaced. That is not quite true. What actually determines whether your plate reads clean and even, or washes out with hotspots, is the optic behind the bulb, and that is exactly the decision F-150, Super Duty, Ram, Tundra, Tacoma, Silverado, Sierra, Wrangler, Subaru, and Nissan or Infiniti owners are making when they land here.
The OEM housing was never built to project light forward, it was built to scatter it sideways off a cheap incandescent wedge. That is why a straight T10/194 LED swap is honestly the simplest of the two paths on trucks like the 2009-2014 F-150, where the factory T10 socket is a direct plug-in with no cutting or adapters needed. The XB housings go the other direction with a forward-facing projector lens matched to that same housing shape, so all the light goes where the plate needs it instead of scattering sideways, and you avoid the hotspots a generic multi-LED bulb can throw inside a housing it was never designed for. These XB assemblies are plug and play, they bolt into the factory mounting points and connect to the factory plug, so swapping the whole housing ends up just as easy as a bulb replacement, there is no cutting, splicing, or extra wiring to fight with. One note for the T10 path: plate housings are generally sealed enough to run an LED, so the usual caution is thermal shock from a hot bulb hit with cold water, which applies to any bulb, not the LED specifically.
Here is the catch.
If your housing is cracked, yellowed, or just looks tired next to lighting you have already upgraded elsewhere, a bulb will not fix that, you need the housing itself. From there the rest of the decision is mostly about how much of the truck you have already touched. If you have done the headlights, fog lights, and tail lights, leaving the plate light stock tends to stand out for the wrong reasons.
One of the Best Back Up Lighting Upgrades! The MORIMOTO XB BACKUP LIGHT BOOST BAR!
Once your plate lighting itself is sorted, the LED700 Backup Light Boost Bar is a simple bolt-on that mounts right to the standard American plate holes with no drilling, pushing 1,950 real lumens of 4500K light for extra reverse visibility. Worth a look but not the main event on this page. One fitment note: on a 2020 F-150 with BLIS in the tail lights, tap the trailer wire rather than the reverse circuit to avoid errors. If you are matching output across the rear of the vehicle, our XB LED Tail Lights are built on that same purpose-built optic approach rather than a bulb dropped into a stock reflector.
