Headlight Retrofit Kit: Build or Upgrade the Right Way
Say your factory reflector housings look tired, or your old HID kit throws glare into oncoming traffic and you want to fix it properly this time. A headlight retrofit kit lets you install a real projector where one never existed, or swap a weak factory projector for something built to actually control the beam. Start by deciding whether you are building a housing your way or replacing your factory projector into what you already have, and the rest of the decision gets easy fast.
The real choice up front is HID or LED projector. HID projectors have a longer track record and tend to throw a slightly wider, more diffuse beam, while LED projectors run cooler, respond instantly, and skip the ballast and igniter altogether. Once you pick a technology, size becomes the next decision: a 3 inch projector generally throws more usable light and suits larger reflector housings, while a 2.5 inch projector fits tighter factory buckets where clearance is limited. In most cases the housing you are retrofitting narrows this down for you, since the physical space available dictates whether a 3 inch or 2.5 inch unit will actually seat and aim correctly.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a full housing rebuild to retrofit a projector?
Not always. If your factory housing already has a projector, a RetroQuik kit or a direct projector swap may be enough. If your housing only has reflectors, you will need a universal retrofit kit or a from-scratch build using bare projectors, shrouds, and a wire harness.
Should I pick HID or LED for a retrofit projector?
Both can work well when sized and installed correctly. HID projectors like the D2S 5.0 have a long track record, while LED options like the MLED 2 skip the ballast and bulb warm-up. The right pick depends on the housing space you have and how the finished beam should look.
What is a shroud for, and do I really need one?
A shroud is the trim bezel around the front of the projector lens. It is not required for the beam to work, but it hides the raw projector body so the finished headlight looks finished rather than like a bare part bolted into place.
Can I reuse my old headlight housings for a retrofit?
You can if they are in good shape, but cracked lenses, moisture inside the housing, or a warped shell can undermine an otherwise good retrofit. Many builders source a fresh set of housings first so the new projector goes into a clean, sealed shell.
Do retrofit kits include the wire harness and controller?
It depends on the kit. Some universal retrofit kits bundle a harness and relay, while bare projectors and RetroQuik brackets are often sold separately from harnesses like the H13 MC or H11 HD and from any controllers needed to run the setup.
