HID Conversion Kit Systems Built Around the Elite Ballast
A 55w ballast pushes roughly 20% more light output than a 35w unit, but it trades away about 1000K of color temperature to get there. That small detail is improtant when looking for an HID conversion kit: pick your bulb size, pick your wattage, then pick a color that still looks right at that wattage. The Morimoto Elite HID System is built to make that decision simple instead of overwhelming.
Every Elite kit ships as a matched pair, ballasts, bulbs, and a cycle-specific relay harness, rated for a 2,500 hour service life (3 to 5 years of typical use) and tested across a -40C to 125C range. The latest-generation XB ballasts run separable igniters, which makes troubleshooting straightforward and lets you swap a single failed part instead of the whole unit. Worth noting: the color options (3000K golden amber, 4000K OEM warm white, 5000K ice white, 6000K neutral white) are tuned around the 35w ballast. Step up to 55w and expect that extra 20% in lumens to shift the color about 1000K warmer than the number printed on the box, which matters if you are trying to match a specific look rather than just chase brightness.
HID vs LED
HID is not the only way to leave halogen behind, and if you are cross-shopping, the honest comparison is against LED. LED bulbs turn on instantly with no warm-up, run cooler, and draw less current, typically around 23 watts versus the 35 watts a comparable HID ballast pulls. That lower draw and heat output is real and worth considering for fog housings or tight engine bays. But LED color choice is usually limited to 5000K or 6000K. An HID conversion kit still wins on color flexibility, from a deep 3000K amber for fog and rain to a crisp 6000K for a brighter, bluer look, and the Elite ballast and bulb pairing is built specifically to keep that range stable instead of flickering or drifting as components age.
