XB LED Fog Lights
Morimoto Fog Lights: Picking the Right XB or XB Evo
A lot of people assume any LED bulb dropped into a stock fog housing counts as a real upgrade. It does not. The reflector was designed around a halogen filament, so a swap bulb scatters light instead of shaping it, and you end up with glare instead of a usable beam. Morimoto XB and XB Evo fog lights are built as complete projector assemblies so the optics, not the bulb, do the work.
Standard XB fog lights run three Nichia 5500K LED chips per side, about 1200 raw lumens each for roughly 2400 lumens total, pushed through projector optics into a wide, evenly distributed beam. The optic housing is electroplated in chrome so it reads as a factory reflector from the outside, not an aftermarket part. The powder-coated cast aluminum housing doubles as the heat sink and protects the internals from moisture and road debris. XB Evo steps that up with a proprietary optic from Morimoto's in-house optical engineer paired with Osram Oslon chips, and it is certified to SAE J583, F3, and ECE R19 for on-road use in both North America and Europe.
Watch how the XB Evo beam compares to a standard housing before you decide which one fits your driving. If your rig is headed off-pavement more than on it, it is worth also looking at our Banger Fog Lights, which are built for a different kind of job than street-legal XB units.
Fitment runs two directions here. Universal 70mm housings cover vehicles that never had LED fogs to begin with, while vehicle-specific housings, Type S, Type T, Type T amber, and Type U, are shaped to match OE mounting points so the plug-and-play harness and factory connectors just work. Honda round housings are one example of that vehicle-specific path, built to replace the factory unit without adapters or trimming on most applications. Finding a discontinued OEM fog housing can take weeks, if it is findable at all, and Morimoto has kept pushing fog light development into increasingly narrow platforms, including the Ferrari F355, to cover that gap.
Start by matching your housing type to your vehicle, then decide between standard XB and XB Evo based on whether you want the newer optic and broader regulatory certification. From there, if you are also replacing bulbs elsewhere in the fog circuit, our LED Fog Light Bulbs are worth a look too.
